Today we explored Salzburg with Manuela, our tour guide. It is amazing how easily navigable the town is on foot. With a population close to the size of Des Moines, it sure is nice to not have to jump in a car to see all the historical sights or travel across town for dinner.
Our tour took place in what seemed like a downpour of snow, which made many sights quite picturesque. We walked down Corn Street, the main shopping center and street of Mozart’s birthplace, visited the Mirabell garden where some of The Sound of Music was filmed, and went inside Salzburg Cathedral. After taking a stroll through St. Peter’s cemetery, another Sound of Music backdrop, we sat down for some Melange (Austrian cappuccino) and strudel at the Cafe Tomaselli, a highly frequented lunch spot of Mozart’s. Following lunch we wandered the streets looking at the oldest pharmacy in Austria and sought out a grocery store where we could purchase the very popular Mozart Balls (a famous chocolate candy).
Next was our tour of Mozart’s birthplace. The tour was very interesting as the home only had four rooms, but much was learned as we saw paintings, pianos, and real Mozart possessions in the home and throughout the museum, which was extended into other floors of the building.
Dinner was a great highlight of the day. We went to St. Peter Stiftskeller, the oldest restaurant in Northern Europe, and enjoyed some wienerschnitzel and more strudel. The day was jam packed and ended with a nice meal in a wonderful atmosphere.
