01-13-13

Today was a lot of fun. The group went on The Sound of Music tour. We had a private bus and a stellar tour guide and bus driver to tell us everything we could possibly want to know about the making of the film. We were able to see both houses used as the exterior of the house. Our tour guide told us that there were scenes where Maria and the Captain would be conversing in a scene in the movie, and in reality they were filmed in two different locations, but it looked like the same place based on the camera angles. They filmed each person talking and then added them together for the film. We also saw the lake where the canoe scene was filmed, where Maria and the children fall out of the canoe to greet the captain. Next we saw the gazebo where love is in the air between Liesl and Rolfe when they sing about being sixteen going on seventeen. On the bus ride between places we had sing-a-longs to all of the songs in the movie which was a lot of fun! We were able to see Nonnberg Abbey from a distance, because it is still an Abbey that houses 35 nuns. We were able to see St. Marks Church where the wedding scene was filmed, just outside of Salzburg. There was also a small village by the church so we had a chance to souvenir shop, look around, and get a baked good if we so chose. It was a great tour and we all had a blast!

After the tour  we had a free afternoon to explore Salzburg on our own. We broke up as a group and some people went to the top of a mountain, others went shopping and to look around, and some others went to see the fortress and the museum. A great day was had by all!
