The beginnings of pharmacology

Our last visit for our Global Perspectives in Nursing journey was a tour of the German Pharmacy Museum located in the beautiful Heidelberg castle! It was interesting to learn about how sickness and health were related to spirituality. Some cultures still consider sickness and health an imbalance or a balance of spirituality. It was also interesting to learn about how we progressed from natural remedies to chemical pharmaceuticals. There were some interesting theories from centuries ago behind certain cures such as a plant with heart shaped leaves being good for the heart, or remnants from a skull curing migraines.

One of the most touching visits

Today, we visited the house of Albert Schweitzer! He was a doctor, missionary, philosopher and musician. "Reverence for life" is a phrase that Schweitzer applied to his life and his work. He decided early in his life that we wanted to be of service and give himself to civilization and he did just that! He is the epitome of a humanitarian. He built and directed a hospital in Lambaréné in the Republic of Gabon, which is in Africa, where there was no access to modern health care. He devoted the remainder of his life to serve people in this area! He would utilize his talent as a musician to have musical tours in order to help fund this hospital. He won the Nobel Prize from which he used to prize money to build a new building at his hospital to house people with leprosy. Such an amazing man! We were not allowed to take pictures inside but I did get a photo of the outside of his house! This visit was one of the most touching of our trip! I bought a postcard from the boutique in his house that says "Do something wonderful. People may imitate it." You can tell he had great hope and compassion for humanity.

An amazing day in Strasbourg

Today was an amazing day in Strasbourg for University of Memphis nursing students! We toured Saint Vincent hospital and met with French nursing students. It was very interesting to hear how the education requirements are different for French students and American students! The French students sang for us and it was neat to see how happy they are about their education. This evening, we enjoyed a nice walk in the city center and a satisfying dinner.

Hospital Trosseau and The Institut Pasteur

University of Memphis Nursing students have been traveling all over Paris! It's beautiful weather and beautiful sights to see! Today, we visited Hospital Trosseau and The Institut Pasteur! It was neat to see the similarities and differences between American and French hospitals. Also, we learned the history of Louis Pasteur, the maker of the rabies vaccination, and toured his apartment.

Escargot!

YAY culture!! It wasn't nasty, it wasn't delicious! It was different! We each had our own serving of six and we ate all of them!

Paris, France has been a dream come true!

Yesterday, we climbed to the top of the Eiffel Tower during the day and continued our journey to the Lock Bridge, le museé du Louvre, Notre Dame, and back to the Eiffel Tower to see it lit up at night! Such a beautiful sight! Maneuvering the metro system has been an adventure and common place to see many different people and styles. Today, we visited Hôpital Trousseu and learned about their education and care. We also made our way down Champs-Élysées and saw L'arc de Triomphe.

Visit to UNAIDS

The group went to UNAIDS today in the mist of the organization planning for the Global Assembly. Again, eye opening information and a wonderful time.

The Nursing Study Abroad also had time to enjoy some sights and have a little fun.

An awesome day in Geneva

We had an awesome day in Geneva, Switzerland while visiting the World Health Organization. Our speakers provided us with pertinent information regarding health care and our present and future roles in the health care field. The major concept for today was "strengthening human resources for health." We learned about the driving forces of the health care field and the workforce challenges which presented us with an opportunity to reflect on our contribution to health care and what we can do as nurses and nursing students to strengthen human resources for health. After our guided tours, we explored the Geneva! We were quite pleased with our ability to navigate without difficulty and be independent. We ate fondue and admired the remarkable landscape and architecture.

Visit to the WHO in Geneva

The Nursing Global Perspectives on Nursing group went to the WHO organization today where the World Health Assembly will be held next Monday. The building was decorated for the event and students were updated on critical issues that will be addressed. The group also visited the International Red Cross where we were educated about human right violations along with interventions on behalf of those who have been affected to bring about resolution.
